Operate LCD by Moving the Hand

December 17, 2009

Scientists from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology developed a LCD display that works by translating movement of the hand, without touching the screen.

They mentioned, users can control the objects on the screen simply by waving or moving the hands in the air without touching the screen or using the mouse and keyboard.

Although users can touch the screen to activate the controls on the screen, but as soon as they move their hands or fingers in front of the screen, the system will automatically translate those movements in the format of three-dimensional (3D).

“This is the level of interaction that has never done anyone before,” said one scientist Ramesh Raskar, as quoted by New Scientist, Thursday (17/12/2009).

Screen was named BiDi it allows users to manipulate or interact with objects on the screen in 3D format.

Raskar says, BiDi which stands for bi-directional is also serves as a 3D scanner. At the time the user rotate an object in front of the screen, the display software will ‘knit’ of a 3D image.

But according to another scientist named Douglas Lanman screen from Brown University has a poor image quality, such as a camera without a lens. The screen can display objects in direct contact with him, but so far it looks good and still look blurry.

That is why, until now scientists are continuing to develop so that the screen is not only unique in terms of innovation, but also has a good image quality and sharp.
