Figures for Laptops Shipping Rise up to 43.4%

May 25, 2010

Gadget News - According to research firm Gartner, laptop shipments rose 43.4 percent in the first three months of 2010, compared to the same period last year.

Most of that growth, 71 percent contributed by the netbook sales. For its own netbook market, Gartner does not expect to be affected by the arrival of the Apple iPad or other tablets.

According to Gartner, the growth from year to year is the highest in the laptop market over the last eight years, while the buyer spent approximately $ 36 billion.

“Total PCs sold in the first quarter of 2010 it reached 49.4 million. Of that number, approximately 20 percent is a kind of netbook. Whereas in the early quarter of 2009, the contribution of the netbook PC market reached 13 percent,” said Gartner analyst Ranjit Atwal, as quoted by Network World, Wednesday (05/26/2010).

Yet in its report, Gartner does not include sales of devices such as iPad tablets because the type is not considered a substitute for a traditional laptop or netbook.

“Netbook still have some differences compared with the tablets, including prices,” said Atwal. If the price of the tablet to change, go Atwal, is possible. Even the number of downloadable applications for the tablet will be able to replace the sales of laptops in the future.

However, Gartner does not deny that if the netbook sales growth to slow down in some areas, thanks to aggressive price cuts and consumer notebooks begin to understand the limitations of form factor.

Increased sales of netbook also help to lower average selling prices, which fell from USD868 to USD732. But as companies begin to make acquisitions to help market stability. One of them is Hewlett-Packard is still a large number of units shipped a laptop, but its competitors grew faster during the first quarter.

HP’s sales grew approximately 23.2 percent, compared with 48.4 percent and 33.1 percent, respectively for the Acer and Dell, which sits in second place and third.

Asus recorded the largest increase since sales rose by 113 percent. But its growth was overshadowed by Toshiba who are in fifth place.
