COFEE-Digital Forensics Tool from Microsoft

Microsoft signed an agreement with the National White Collar Crime Center (NW3C) to distribute the Computer Online Forensic Evidence Extractor (COFEE) to the interests of the field of digital forensics.

NW3C is a non-profit membership organization dedicated to supporting the process of law enforcement, investigation and prosecution of various forms of crimes involving high technology.

For that, Microsoft provides COFEE for law enforcement agencies in helping them analyze and investigate criminal cases committed complex perpetrators through the Internet and computer technology.

Net Security, Wednesday (14/10/2009) launch, COFEE use of digital forensic technology to help investigators gather evidence in the form of directly computing activities used to commit a crime.

“Common challenge in terms of cyber crime investigation is the need to conduct forensic analysis on computers,” Microsoft spokesman said.

“While evidence such as the use of computers as an active center systems and data networks are often disappeared and evaporated when the computer is turned off. In fact, this evidence consisted of various information that may be reinforcing in the process of investigations and prosecutions,” he added.

With COFEE computer operator does not require special skills to capture a variety of information. Even the lay computer user can be guided using COFEE pre-configured in less than 10 minutes.

This allows them to take part in operating the digital forensic tools to gather strong evidence needed for the investigation.
