The cyber criminals exploit uncontrolled anger in the party Serena Williams U.S. Open semi-finals earlier this month. Events were used to trigger campaigns Search Engine Optimization (SEO) which can make Internet users to download malicious software.

According to Symantec, a video featuring Serena Williams upset the line judge is one of the most searched items on the Internet. Even so, the curious Internet users should be careful choosing a web site where they watch these shows because they feared it would suffer losses.

For example, users who perform searches with keywords such as ‘Serena Williams Outburst’ can easily be directed to a domain name pixnat.com. The site looks like the original site, but Symantec found that the site has been hacked and storing fake antivirus scanners.

“Online sites are not vigilant will soon see a pop-up window on the browser to warn them about the various kinds of security threats, before offering the opportunity to download a program that will fix it,” said Hon Lau, Senior Manager of Security Response, Symantec, in a press statement our quotation, 25 September 2009. “They should have refused the offer because it is a fake antivirus software that can harm their computers,” he said.

The attack, according to Lau, also known as ‘SEO poisoning’ which is a common attack used by the criminal opportunists to take advantage of the natural curiosity of people.

“We have classified the attack as a small attack, but could show how dangerous it is misleading applications,” said Lau. “Applications may be seen as legitimate software, but they are there to retrieve your personal information and your computer hostage,” he said.

“If you want to avoid the risk of identity theft or do not want to be a premeditated crime funders, we suggest the user to avoid this danger,” said Lau.
