Nigerian of Spam Mafia arrested
October 23, 2009Nigerian anti-corruption police have closed about 800 sites and 18 syndicate caught in a mail fraud action to stop cyber crime. “More than 800 email address used to commit fraud actions have been identified and shut down,” said Commission Economic and Financial Crimes (EFCC) Farida Waziri.
“There were 18 arrests of cyber crime organizations that netted a high level in the operating organization cyber crime syndicates,” he added, as quoted by the AFP, Friday (october/23/2009).
EFCC in a statement, they have adopted smart technology collaboration with Microsoft, to track the mail fraud. Earlier, police received complaints from the public because of the many crime reports through cyberspace.
In March Spanish police arrested 23 people, who mostly come from Nigeria, they were allegedly running a spam and action are estimated to have deceived more than 150 people in the United States and Europe. In conducting the action, the gang would send thousands of letters every day for potential victims, making them believe that they won a million dollars.
Victims duped of their money when asked to pay a processing fee or provide their bank account details where the funds will be transferred.
Some fraud also hacked into the personal email account and send an email to a contact list with the content claimed victims stranded and asked for emergency cash.
