Activists Ask Turkey to ‘Loosen’ Internet Rules

Internet News – European human rights activists asked the Turkish government to loosen the rules about the Internet. Turkish Government has blocked service videos ‘YouTube’ and hundreds of sites that are considered breaking the rules.

Turkey is considered as the country’s most ‘fierce’ about Internet blocking in comparison with other European countries. Turkish government action is similar to that carried out a country like Myanmar and Iran.

Activists belonging to the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) has since the year 2007 approximately 5000 Turkish government blocked the site.

“This is tantamount to restricting freedom of expression and the right of people to obtain information,” urged the OSCE in his statement as quoted by Cellular-News, Friday (25/06/2010).

Turkish Transport Minister in charge of Internet issues, Binyali Yildrim considered responsible for the tightening of the rule. Blocking of YouTube is also pointed out the Turkish government’s efforts to require Google to immediately open an office in Turkey.

Yildrim reasoned, that every company like Google should be subject to the rules that exist in Turkey. Youtube itself has been blocked since two years ago. load due to content deemed insulting Turkey’s founder, Kemal Ataturk.
