About Blocking The Internet in Turkey

Regulatory organizations of human rights in Europe called the Organization for Security and Cooperation Europe (OSCE) asked Turkey to end the policy of strict application of the surf for their citizens (like blocking site in china).

“Until now, Turkey blocked approximately 3700 sites, including YouTube, GeoCities and Google,” said representatives of the OSCE Media Freedom Division, Miklos Haraszti, as quoted from Web Pro News, Wednesday (20/1/2010).

“Even though some content like child pornography should be given sanctions, such laws are not applicable. Blocking access to almost all sites in Turkey will disable access to a large number of social networks and modern file sharing,” he added.

In a Haraszti report presented in Ankara State University, Istanbul and the International Law Congress in Ankara Bar Association he stated that in Turkey he can not even access the OSCE videos on YouTube.

“Blocking access to the Internet in Turkey together with violating the public’s right to access the Internet,” he said.

That is why, the OSCE through Harszti concluded, it is necessary to reform and stopping the application of Internet blocking law. OSCE hoped, the Turkish government would listen to the advice of the OSCE and can quickly remove the rules which potentially alienating citizens from parts of Turkey the global information society.
