June 1, 2010

Computer Hardware News – China’s ambition to become a major global force in the world of supercomputers. Currently China still ranked the second fastest about supercomputer.

According to a survey that puts the Top 500 supercomputer rankings in several countries, supercomputing machine called nebulae, located at National Supercomputing Centre in the southern city of Shenzhen may appear at 1.271 petaflops per second. One petaflop itself equivalent to 1000 trillion calculations.

United States still dominates the list, because they hold the top position with Jaguar supercomputer, which is part of the government facility in Tennessee. However, China has a total of 24 systems included in the list, and two in ten large, Tianhe-1 supercomputer ranked at seven.

Currently, the nebulae will be built by Dawning Information Industry Co., Ltd., which has a theoretical speed of 2.98 petaflops per second, so that would make it the fastest in the world. Similarly quoted by AFP on Tuesday (01/06/2010).

China’s government is using its own supercomputer for research purposes and so forth.

Top 500 supercomputers on the list judged by the speed of performance in benchmark tests. Submissions are voluntary, so it does not cover all the machines.
